CHAPTER NINETEEN
Watters froze. âWhoever you are,â he said. âI advise you to lower your weapon at once. I am a police officer.â
âTurn around slowly!â The pressure eased slightly.
Watters turned around to see Fergus MacPhee holding a sawn-off shotgun, a poacherâs weapon, in his strong hands.
Watters relaxed slightly. âFergus MacPhee! What the devil are you doing here? I thought youâd be long gone from the area by now!â
âSergeant Watters!â MacPhee lowered his weapon and uncocked the hammers of his shotgun.
âWhy have you remained here?â Watters repeated.
âUnfinished business,â MacPhee said.
âHas it to do with the murder of Tam Stewart?â
âAlways the policeman, arenât you?â MacPhee asked, with a faint smile on his long face. âWhat are you doing here?â
âHunting down illicit whisky distillers,â Watters said. âAnd watching men I think were involved in the murder of Tam Stewart and the theft of Mr Coxâs coach.â
âYou got the carriage back safely, Sergeant Watters,â MacPhee said.
âWe did. And you got the handcuffs off, I see.â
MacPhee grinned, with his teeth white in the dark. âI did,â he said. âAre you heading off back to Dundee tonight?â
âNot tonight, Fergus,â Watters told MacPhee his plans.
MacPhee glanced up the hill. âCome with me, Sergeant. Iâll find you a better bed than a mattress of nettles.â
MacPheeâs caravan was a quarter of a mile away, with a cunning screen of interwoven branches shielding it from any casual passers-by. The horse, front legs hobbled, grazed fitfully, and Mrs MacPhee opened the caravan door to her husbandâs triple knock.
âIâve brought a guest,â MacPhee said.
âSo I see,â Mrs MacPhee treated Watters to a curt nod. âThe policeman who arrested you.â Her hooped jet earrings dangled nearly to her shoulders, and she wore the same long, thin-bladed knife at her waist.
âThe policeman who allowed me to escape,â MacPhee amended.
âThat too,â Mrs MacPhee peered into the dark with one hand on the hilt of her knife.
âHeâs alone,â MacPhee said. âIâve been following him half the night.â
âYouâd better come in, Sergeant Watters,â Mrs MacPhee invited.
The caravanâs interior was clean, with a plethora of colourful crockery hanging on hooks, a gold-and-silver coloured crucifix on display and a double bed behind a pinned-back curtain. A hanging oil lamp provided cheerful light.
âSergeant Watters is spending the night with us,â MacPhee said.
âAnd heâs welcome,â Mrs MacPhee said, surprisingly. Youâll have to bed on the floor, Sergeant, unless you wish to share with the dogs outside.â
âThe floor looks much more inviting than the woods,â Watters said.
âSergeant Watters was observing the whisky makers at MacBethâs Castle,â
Mrs MacPhee watched him through narrowed eyes. âWas he indeed. And what did you learn there, Sergeant?â
Watters noted the name, MacBethâs Castle. âI learned they have a large-scale operation with armed guards,â he said.
âTheyâre a nasty bunch,â Mrs MacBeth said.
âDid either of you hear anything about Gregor Vlasov?â Watters dropped the name in casually to gauge the reaction.
MacPhee glanced at his wife before replying. âWho?â
âWe found a dead body near Auchterhouse,â Watters said. âHe was a Russian fellow named Gregor Vlasov.â
âOh, yes. I heard about the body, but I didnât know the fellow was Russian,â MacPhee said.
